Paleo Fall Turkey Burgers
Paleo
Dairy-Free
Gluten-Free
I have been absent from the blog and Instagram for the last couple of weeks unfortunately out of necessity. With all that’s going on with school, work, and professional development courses I am taking, I was feeling completely overwhelmed, and this was the one thing that was optional (despite being something I get a lot of enjoyment out of!) that I could take some time off of to regroup. HOWEVER, this is something I wanted to share ASAP because it’s so delicious and easy to make for a quick dinner!
We’ve had some great fall weather the last few weeks (mixed in between the typical crisp and/or rainy days) and we’ve used it as an opportunity to get some end of season barbacuing in! These fall themed burgers quickly became one of our favorite new recipes! With fall flavors like apple, cranberry, and sage, it’s basically like thanksgiving dinner on a bun!
We decided to use regular burger buns for this recipe, so use whatever your favorite buns are! If you’re looking for a great paleo/grain-free burger bun recipe, check out this one from Paleo Running Momma! You won’t be disappointed, AND they’re so easy to make. We used these buns for almost all of our summer barbecues at home!
While the burgers themselves are paleo, we did decide to add some goat Gouda to ours! I don’t personally have any issues with dairy, but Kai does. He has slowly worked some high quality goats cheese back into his diet and seems to be tolerating it really well, and goat Gouda sounded like the perfect addition to these fall burgers! Feel free to omit if you are diary sensitive, or use your favorite cheese if you aren’t!
These burgers also include a recipe for a homemade cranberry sauce! This is actually the cranberry sauce that I’ll make for holiday dinners, but it pairs perfectly with the rest of the ingredients in these burgers and is super simple to make!
What do I need to make these Paleo Fall Turkey Burgers?
- Ground turkey – we used TruLocal ground turkey for these burgers!
- Caramelized onions
- Apple
- Fresh sage
- Fresh thyme
- Garlic
- Sea salt
- Black pepper
- Cinnamon
- Fresh cranberries
- Orange zest/juice
- Honey
- Cinnamon stick
Servings:
10 burgers
Prep Time:
10-15 minutes
Cook Time:
10-12 minutes
Total Time:
20-27 minutes
Ingredients:
For the burgers:
- 2 pounds of ground turkey
- 1/4 cup of caramelized onions – see note below
- 1 apple, peeled and shredded – we used a honey crisp but you can use whatever your favorite is!
- 1 tablespoon of fresh, finely chopped sage
- 1 teaspoon of fresh, finely chopped thyme
- 1 teaspoon of sea salt
- 1/2 teaspoon of black pepper
- 2 cloves of garlic, minced
- 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon
For the cranberry sauce:
- 1 1/4 cup of fresh cranberries
- zest from 1 orange
- 1/2 cup of freshly squeezed orange juice
- 1/3 cup of honey
- 1 cinnamon stick
Plus your choice of bun/cheese (we used goat Gouda) and arugula!
Instructions:
Step 1
For the cranberry sauce:
It is easiest to make your cranberry sauce ahead of time (a few hours) as it will continue to thicken as it cools in the fridge!
For the cranberry sauce, place all of the ingredients into a medium size pot over medium high heat. Bring to a boil and then reduce to a simmer, stirring occasionally for 15-20 minutes. The mixture will thicken as the cranberries blister and open. Remove cinnamon stick from the pot, place cranberry sauce inside a Tupperware container, and refrigerate until completely cool and ready to use.
Step 2
For the burgers:
Place all of your burger ingredients into a large bowl and mix well with your hands to combine
Step 3
Form mixture into approximately 10-12 burger patties (about 1/2 cup of mixture per burger)
Step 4
These instructions are for grilling, but feel free to make these in a cast iron pan as well!
Heat your grill to medium heat, and oil the grates before placing turkey burgers on top. Place your burgers onto the grill and cook for approximately 5 minutes per side, or until the internal temperature reaches 160 degrees. If you’re using cheese, place cheese on top of the burgers when almost finished cooking and allow to melt for 2-3 minutes before removing from the grill
Step 5
Remove burgers from grill and place on buns (if using). Top with the arugula, and cranberry sauce. Enjoy!
Notes:
- You can use regular onions in your burgers, but the caramelized add a great flavor! To make caramelized onions: finely slice one onion (we usually use red), place in a pan with a table spoon of avocado oil over medium heat and cook until translucent and softened (approximately 5 minutes). Add a generous amount of salt to the pan, mix with the onions and reduce heat to medium-low and allow to continue cooking for another 20 minutes. Allow to cool before adding to burger mixture.
