Vegan Hot Chocolate
Paleo
Dairy-Free
Gluten-Free
Nut-Free
Refined Sugar-Free
This recipe is quickly going to become your favorite hot chocolate recipe! It’s so easy, takes only a matter of minutes AND it’s free of dairy, nuts, and refined sugar! Everyone should be able to enjoy this recipe. We’ll be making this a lot over the holidays while we cozy up to our favorite Christmas movies!
It’s been below freezing most nights and several of the last days, so we’ve already gotten into our Christmas movies. So far we’ve watched at least 6. We’re trying to pace ourselves so we don’t finish all of the movies on our list before Christmas actually happens!
I topped our hot chocolate with SmashMallow’s Candy Cane Marshmallows that I bought from Natura Market. Natura Market has all of our favorite dairy-free/paleo-vegan snacks and treats! If you’re having trouble finding great tasting food that you can eat for whatever diet you follow, you’ll definitely be able to find lots of options here!
What do I need to make this vegan Hot chocolate?
- Plant based milk
- Cocoa powder
- Maple syrup or honey
- Cinnamon (optional)
- Vanilla
- Optional: marshmallows or coconut whipped cream
Servings:
2-4
Prep Time:
2 minutes
Cook Time:
5-8 minutes
Total Time:
7-10 minutes
Ingredients:
- 3 cups of plant-based milk
- 4 1/2 tablespoons of cocoa powder
- 4 tablespoons of maple syrup or honey + more if you like your hot chocolate extra sweet
- 1 teaspoons of vanilla
- optional: 1/8 teaspoon of cinnamon *see notes
- Plus coconut whipped cream or vegan marshmallows
Instructions:
Step 1
Whisk together the plant-based milk, cocoa powder, maple syrup and cinnamon (if using) in a medium sized pot – we use a hand held frother to make sure there’s no lumps!
Step 2
Place the pot on the stove-top over medium high head and bring to a simmer, whisk frequently. Once mixture begins to boil, remove from heat
Step 3
After removing the pot from the stove top, whisk in your vanilla. Pour hot-chocolate into 4 small mugs or 2 large mugs and serve immediately! Top with coconut whipped cream or vegan marshmallows for something extra sweet!
Notes:
- You can use your favorite plant-based milk for this recipe. We use cashew because we find it has the creamiest texture, but any will do! You could also use regular dairy-based milk if you don’t have any dairy issues
- Maple syrup or honey could be used. The maple syrup doesn’t give the hot chocolate a maple flavor, so either are fine!
- You can omit the cinnamon, but it does add a hint of cinnamon-y flavor in the background which is delightful!
